Job Description

Medical Social Worker III at Public Service Commission Kenya (PSCK)

The Commission dates back to 1954 when Civil Service Commission was established by British Colonial Government following Holmes Commission Report, 1948; Civil Service Commission was advisory to the Governor in matters of appointments; At independence in 1963 it was enshrined in the constitution and renamed Public Service Commission; Independence Constitution had Regional PSC’s but abolished in 1964 following constitutional amendments; It is the oldest Constitutional Commission and its mandate has expanded over the years. The Commission then constituted of a chairman, a deputy chairman and fifteen members all appointed by the President. The Commission, since then, has handled matters of human resource management in the public service especially the civil service and local authorities. Constitution of Kenya, 2010 promulgated on 27th August 2010 reconstituted the Commission with a redefined and expanded mandate and a lean membership.

Seven (7) Positions


Salary Scale: Ksh. 25,470 – Ksh. 33,950 p.m. (CSG 12)
House Allowance: Ksh.6, 750 p.m
Commuter Allowance: Ksh.4, 000p.m
Leave allowance: As existing in the Civil Service
Annual Leave: 30 working days per financial year
Medical Cover: As provided by the government
Terms of Service: Three (3) years contract

Requirements for appointment

For appointment to this grade a candidate must have:-

  • a KCSE mean grade C or its equivalent qualification; and
  • a Diploma in any of the following disciplines:-Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Mental Health or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution

Duties and Responsibilities

An officer at this level will work under the guidance of a senior officer. Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:-

  • participating as a member of Health Team in addressing the psychosocial effects as related to patients’ diagnosis, prognosis and future resettlement and counseling patients especially in cases associated with pandemic diseases, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy;
  • extracting psychosocial information from the patient and observation of casual factors which might be useful to the treatment plan; and
  • implementing patients’ treatment programmes and follow up on discharge
